Proulx’s analysis of Hattie’s recent work clearly shows how an epistemological orientation towards mathematical activity, and the teaching and learning of mathematics, differs from the pedagogical quest for “something that works”. He demonstrates how a concern for what is at work contrast with Hattie’s project, and highlights how, from that perspective, the contradictions observable through his writing are important. But we have to recognize that what Proulx calls the perspective of a researcher in didactique des mathématiques really is his perspective, one in which epistemological questions are at the center of attention.
